Job Description

  • Location: Manhattan, NYC
  • Children: One girl, aged 12
  • Salary: £90,000–£110,000 DOE

The Role

A prominent New York family are seeking a Private Tutor & Mentor for their teenage daughter, a bright and thoughtful 12-year-old. She attends one of the city’s most competitive schools and while capable academically, she benefits from guidance in confidence, resilience, and independence.

The family values honesty, encouragement, and positive role models. They are looking for someone who can offer both academic expertise and genuine mentorship. They also recognise the importance of balance: the Tutor will have defined hours (primarily after school and early evenings, with flexibility around exams) and will be encouraged to rest, reflect, and bring her best self to the role.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing academic support, particularly in English and Humanities
  • Helping with organisation, exam preparation, and coursework management
  • Mentoring the student in confidence, independence, and curiosity
  • Encouraging creativity and authentic self-expression
  • Liaising with teachers and parents to ensure consistency

Candidate requirements:

  • Strong academic background, ideally English or Humanities degree
  • Teaching experience or proven record tutoring teenagers
  • Ability to mentor and inspire confidence in adolescents
  • Previous private household or international experience desirable
  • Warm, empathetic, and highly emotionally intelligent

At Quintessential Governess, we champion roles where tutors are respected as professionals, not pressured as service providers. This family understands the need for a healthy, collaborative working relationship that supports both their daughter and her Tutor.
